Kent Benson was drafted #1 out of the University of Indiana in 1977 and he had almost no impact whatsoever in the league. Runners up would be Louisville's Pervis Ellison in 1989, Maryland's Joe Smith in 1995, and Michael Olawakandi, who was selected from University of the Pacific in 1998. The draft is such a crap shoot, that is why they pluck talent right from High School now... Kwame is still too young to write off... he is at least decent when healthy.

forget about Wilt Chamberlin and all them, that was old school. there wasn't as much talent or competition around then.... defensive strategies aren't as well developed as they are today... Wilt is a Center who is close to the basket and should get points at a faster rate... he is just way more dominate of his time... and plus.. his range was no more than about 18-20 ft. max
Jordan..arguably the second best.... no doubt.... he could be tied with Kobe... they both bring the same attitude.. physical pressence, and they can both light it up from anywhere on the court on any given night against any team... they both have the will to take over a game and are willing to take the last shot in the clutch... don't get me wrong...jordan is a tremendously great scorer....
...but to be able to create your own shot play after play, game after game. getting double/triple teamed from the 3pt line! (24 ft. away)!... that is just ridiculous... and the truth is, Kobe doesn't really have much help around him to keep defenders guarding the other teamates... Kobe is a one-man recking crew... he is the best individual scorer in NBA history... and the fact that he is doing this while there are so many "Kobe-haters" around...(unlike Jordan-haters), is pretty remarkable as well... this guy can just flat out score

Michael Jordan is the best, and purest scorer the NBA has ever seen. A lot of you will say Wilt, but he was a much more dominant, inside player, playing in a weaker league. If Jordan played in Wilt's time, he would have averaged 60 plus every game. His clutch shooting ability, along with his skill to create a shot in any situation speaks for itself. He scored points at will every night, sometimes surprising even himself (who remembers the shoulder shrug and head shake after he made three pointer after three pointer?). And he did all this as a 6'6'' guard, not a 7 foot big-man. He scored points hurt, with the flu, it didnt matter....unstoppable.
Kobe Bryant is ranked 26th in NBA history for average ppg in the playoffs. That is why I can't say he's the best scorer in NBA history. Not only did MJ average over 30 ppg over his career in the regular season, he also averaged over 33 ppg throughout 179 playoff games. Kobe on the other hand has averaged 22.9 ppg in 126 playoff games.
Some big names above him are Barkley, Bird, Duncan, Kareem, English, King, Paul Pierce, Malone, Rick Barry, Ray Allen, Wilkins, Wade, Shaq, Dirk, Hakeem "the Dream", Gervin, Baylor, Carter, Jerry West, McGrady, Iverson, and Jordan.
That's a long list to be behind and that was leaving out a few. Until he can get up there in the playoffs against real competition (unlike scoring 81 vs the Raptors last season, 65 against Portland, 50 vs Minnesota, and 60 vs Memphis), I can't give him support as the best scorer in NBA history. For the record, every time Kobe has scored over 40 points in a game against the Suns, the Lakers are 0-8. So far, he's shown that given almost 40 shots, a player can score over 60 against terrible teams.
Best scorer in the regular season ever was Wilt. Best scorer in regular season+playoffs is Jordan.

Michael Jordan hands down over Kobe any day. In fact, the only person i'd say that would give MJ a challenge would be Chamberlain. But I say it's still MJ. You can't deny what he did and how he did it. He was clutch and made everyone around him better. He didn't need a dominant big man to help him out. His abilities made several around him appear better than they were.

Both amazing but Kobe gets the nod. Firstly the game back then was played differently and high scoring totals were very common. What the suns do today was the average in Wilts day. Wilt鈥檚 team were averaging around 125 points a game with the final score at 169 to 147 in his 100 point outing, while Kobe鈥檚 Lakers averaged around 98 with the final score 122-104. This shows that defense has greatly improved over time and therefore tougher for Kobe to score. Secondly Wilt鈥檚 coach put in subs in the final few minutes to foul the other team so the ball could get back to Wilt as soon as possible trying to make him reach this feat. Kobe鈥檚 was done when his team was down by 18 in the 3rd quarter and he decided to take matters into his own hands with help from no one. Finally as a guard Kobe had to beat players off the dribble and rise up and over defenders time and time again which takes a huge amount of energy. Wilt simple had to catch turn and drop it in as no one had the size to match up with him. So taking into account today鈥檚 game, the fouling circus by Wilts team, and how much harder it is for a guard physically鈥obe wins this the most amazing award.

well...when you think about it 100pts. is better than 81 but look at the difference in the year it was done. chamberlain did it when? in the 1970's. getting to the point, chamberlain did his 100 on a different kind of basketball wherein all offense and no defense. when teams go 130 pts a night. kobe did his 81 when coaches think that defense is the best offense and teams score 90-100 points a night.

Neither. because they played different times of the century and times of the NBA. There was no shot clock or 3sec violation back then when Wilt played. Also Kobe Bryant played against a bad D-fense team so he scored easily. So cant compare them 2.

The Raptors pretty much stopped guarding Kobe (literally). He was getting uncontested dunks the whole night, where Wilt was being quintuple-teamed (granted, by midgets compared to him), but still.
100 points is 100 points.
Hands down, it's Wilt's 100. Kobe could bring the ball up the floor and launch any time he wanted. Wilt had to rely on teammates bringing the ball down and passing to him (except when he stole inbounds passes and scored on them). Also, the Knicks tried fouling Wilt's teammates so that he couldn't get the ball. But his teammates were not particularly good free throw shooters and Wilt rebounded the misses and put them back for scores. The Knicks even tried running the 24 second clock down before shooting so there would be less opportunities for Wilt to score.
Wilt took 63 shots to get 100 points; Kobe took 46 shots to get 81 points. Kobe was 7 of 13 from the 3 point arc - they didn't have that when Wilt played. Wilt went 28-32 from the line, Kobe went 18-20 from the line. Also, Kobe had 6 rebounds and 2 assists; Wilt had 25 rebounds (assists weren't officially kept as a stat then).
As far as "midgets"... Darrall Imhoff (at 6'10" 250) was no midget, and guarded Wilt for most of the game (he fouled out early in the 4th quarter). Imhoff was a rookie filling in for starter and did an admirable job considering after he fouled out, Wilt set the scoring record for a single quarter at 31 points.
And... the 24 second shot clock was instituted in 1954-55 season (after computing the average time of possession in the 1953-54 season). Wilt's rookie year (when he earned both Rookie of the Year and MVP and won the scoring and rebounding titles) was 1959-60 season.
The Knick center was 6'11", a whopping two inches shorter than Wilt, the night Wilt scored 100. Lots of players in NBA history have been guarded by guys two inches shorter than they were, but no one's come close to scoring 100.
Chamberlain's 100 point game is the only "triple" in NBA history. He also chipped in with 25 rebounds.
Not only that, but Wilt was 28 for 32 from the free throw line that night... that's ALONE might be more impressive than anything Kobe's done (if you knew how badly Wilt shot free throws)! I believe the 28 free throws is still an NBA record to this date.
Kobe Bryant's 81 performance was more impressive for the following reasons:
(1) While Wilt obviously has the higher point total, Wilt was in a day where there weren't as many average players that were still gifted athletically or physically (consider the height, weight, and knowledge base of players then compared to today).
"In the 100-point game, the 7-foot-1 Chamberlain was not guarded by anyone taller than 6-10. And the lane was only 12 feet wide 鈥?it is 16 feet today 鈥?so Chamberlain could establish a position closer to the basket."

definitely Wilt Chamberlains 100 point game because unlike Kobe Bryant Wilt did it in regulation and Kobe's 81 point game took an overtime session.
Kobe's 81 with out a doubt. First, 36 of Wilts points were from the free throw line. Kobe had like 18 free throws. Second it is easier for a center because they just have 3 foot bank shoots instead of 20 foot jump shoots. And during that time period there was only 2 good centers in Wilt and Bill Russell.
Chamberlain's, and here's why:
1. He got 19 more points than Kobe.
2. He didn't get the ball as a guard at the start of every play. He either got the rebound and put it back in (he ended with 25 rebounds), or got a good pass from his teammate inside.
3. The three-point line wasn't even invented yet.
4. He had 60+ points in a game 18 times that sehason, so this was only the cream of the crop.
5. His career free throw percentage was 51% and that night he was 28 for 32 (88%).
Kobe Bryants feat was more astonishing because Wilt played against people who were 5 inches smaller. It also was never proven because the game was never taped or broadcasted.

2. Shaq is the strongest
3. Ron Artest and Rasheed are the best fighters
4. Allen Iverson plays like someone twice his size
5. Earl Boykins can bench three times his own weight
6. Kobe has the resilience to play a season through a false accusation that threatens to send his neck into a noose. He can withstand any emotional setback.
