Which NBA team had the most wins without making the playoffs in NBA history?

With the Western Conference the way it is this year, a team will likely miss the playoffs after winning 50 games. For historical perspective, I was wondering what most victories a team has had WITHOUT making the playoffs (likely before this season will beat that record).

The most recent was the 2000-2001 Rockets with 45 wins. The 1982-1983 Kansas City Kings and the 1981-1982 Warriors didn't get in with 45 wins, either. No one has ever missed the play-offs with 46. Conversely, the 2003-2004 Celtics went to the play-offs at 10 games under .500. I'm pretty sure the record will fall in the west this year, along with a few under .500 teams in the east getting in, again. The worst team that I could find getting in was the 1987-1988 Spurs, at 31-51. Yikes.

no team that has won 46 games has ever missed the playoffs. this year might actually change that.
1982 Supersonics?
I'm going with Denver. They'll get between 48 and 52 wins but will fall short.
I'm not sure the team, but I think it was somewhere around 45 wins and not making the playoffs...

The West is crazy this year, it's nuts that there will be a 50-win team not in the playoffs. I'd hate to be in the West. Boston/D-town might be able to walk through the NBA Finals because their route won't be as difficult as whomever comes out of the Western Conference.
I think the Denver team this year deserves that spot.
