I disagree that a rookie will ever win the MVP again. It could, and probably will happen one day. He'll have to step into the perfect situation (as his team will have to already be constructed around him in order to win the 50+ games it'll take) but it's not impossible. The problem is, most players aren't staying incollegefor the 3-4 years necessary to step into the league ready to perform at that level. That's not to say it will never happen though.
Unseld and Chamberlain are correct, and I would agree Bird could've easily won it in '80. I would say the biggest jip however came in David Robinson's rookie year, when Magic won the award over him. Not only did Robinson take the Spurs single-handedly from 21 wins to 56 wins (the largest turnaround in NBA history), he also put up some amazing numbers---24 ppg, 12 rpg, 2 apg, 1.7 spg, 3.9 bpg, shooting 53% from the floor.

Obviously they have decided to not allow such a thing anymore, as the idea is that a rookie can never be the most valuable player in the league. Rookie of the Year is the MVP for rookies in the same way that Defensive Rookie of the Year is the DPOY for rookies in the NFL.
They will never award another MVP to a rookie.
